   2010 Mazda6 GT I4 Road Test Review

that the Japanese automaker manufactures vehicles that offer tons of driving excitement, coupled with sensible value in the form of low prices for their cars.  If you've ever driven a Toyota Camry and a Mazda6 back to back, you'll quickly understand that Mazda's marketing is no mere hype.

The reason is the cars they offer compete well with sports sedans from Europe.  Not quite in the luxury department, but certainly in the performance and handling departments.  Case in point is a recent test vehicle, the 2010 Mazda6 four cylinder.

When people ask me what kind of midsize sedan I would recommend, I usually answer with a question. I ask what features

are high on their priority scale and which ones aren't so high. Price is usually the main factor when it comes to investing in reliable transportation, but what I also find very high on one's priorities list is a car that's good looking. Safety features are important and so are available options, but looks can make or break a deal. Then again, does that really come as a surprise?

What comes as no surprise is that the all-new 2010 Mazda6 is both affordable and very sleek. It comes with a whole slew of standard safety and convenience features and the ability to make peoples' heads turn whether you're in the base GS or the top-of-the-line GT-V6. That's my, and a lot of other peoples' kind of car.

the 6 has it going on. Mazda has a knack for creating beautiful cars that don't go over the top to make a statement. From its front fascia and fog lights all the way to its prominent wheel arches stuffed with 235/45R18 tires wrapped in 18" alloy wheels, to the dual chrome exhaust pipes integrated into its oh-so-sleek rear bumper, the GT-V6 looks good from every angle, and I mean every angle. What's more, my tester's Sangria Red Mica exterior colour also does a good job of attracting onlookers. But what impresses me most about the Mazda6 is its ability to look aggressive yet also elegant at the same time. It's the kind of car that gets noticed, not because of outlandish architecture but because it appeals to the senses (looks hot, sounds great, feels good), complemented by a low intimidation factor when getting behind the wheel.

speaking of getting behind the wheel, the Mazda6 has no problem making its new driver feel right at home. The interior has a tightly knit fit and finish and the plush leather upholstery – although it gets quite crisp in the colder climates – looks darn good. The touch-screen display combined with the navigation system ($2,595) that comes in the GT-V6 version makes life easy, not only if you have to get somewhere you've never gone before, but it is very user-friendly and doesn't require the help of the owner's manual to get the show on the road. And what would this sultry sedan be without an incredible, premium Bose audio system with ten speakers? Well, not as lively, for sure, as this system is fabulous. Whether I was listening to my favourite channel on Sirius satellite radio or my iPod, I was a happy driver the whole way.

Nissan Altima and Honda Accord, breaking into that market is anything but easy. Mazda tried for years with its 626, and initially at least, when the car was the style leader and sportier than its rivals, it fared pretty well. Things got much better for the alternative Japanese brand in 2004 with the introduction of the Mazda6, not surprisingly for the good looking, sporty model.

Now, the populace has an entirely new reason to fall in love with the Mazda6 all over again. For the 2009 model year it's entirely new, and even better looking than its predecessor. Whether you're looking at its sultry exterior curves or sitting in its redesigned cabin, the fit and finish is superb and poses the question, "Can the base price of it really be $22,495?" Indeed.

balance of sport and luxury, the new Mazda6 redefines the midsize class.

Those who read my ramblings regularly, know that such seemingly unbridled praise doesn't leave my lips very often, although more so with regards to Mazda vehicles in recent years than some other brands. No, if I'm impressed I try to curb my enthusiasm with more objective sounding accolades so as not to sound like a "fan" or worse, a "brand zealot". I've met these types in automotive journalist circles over the years, and their wanton adulation of a specific automaker makes me question their integrity, so I tread carefully when making any "best in class" comments. The Mazda6, however, is so good in every way that I'm willing to say it's a front runner at the very least.

yet another milestone mark to its "best-selling two-seat sports car of all time" credentials. The new number is 900,000 units sold, and it's taken the tiny roadster 21 years and 10 months since its April 1989 inception to do so.

"More than 20 years have passed since the first-generation Mazda MX-5 was born," said Seita Kanai, Mazda's executive officer in charge of development. "During this time, society and vehicles themselves have changed significantly. Responding to environmental issues and the depletion of the Earth's natural resources has become increasingly important for all automakers. As part of its environmental efforts, Mazda announced its new SKYACTIV technologies last year. Currently, we are pushing forward with development of future products that will incorporate these technologies. Many of the elements that go into our SKYACTIV technologies, such as comprehensive weight reduction, grew from the long years of development work that have gone into the MX-5. arrived on the market with only a minor facelift in between, which is a great deal longer shelf life than most cars enjoy.

Since the 5 first arrived Mazda has overhauled the majority of its lineup to conform to its new Nagare design language, with only the Ford Escape-based Tribute, Ford Ranger-based B-Series pickup truck (and this one is on its way out), and Mazda5 soldiering forward relatively unchanged. The new 5, as seen in these photos, will get the swoopy lines already incorporated into the 3, 6, CX-7, CX-9, and, at least in the grille, the MX-5, which will likely breathe new life into sales.

Tacoma is more of a mid-size model, as is its Nissan Frontier rival and the once top-selling Dodge Dakota. Honda's unorthodox Ridgeline falls into that category too. No, if you want a compact truck you're going to have to choose between four of the oldest models on the market, the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Ford Ranger and Mazda B-Series.

In reality, these four trucks are actually only two vehicles under the skin. Except for unique grilles and some other trim details the two GM models are identical, and Mazda's B-Series is really a Ford Ranger in drag. Both GM and Ford/Mazda models offer very good value, but compared to their rivals they're showing their age.

good fuel economy, and price it within reach of the average customer. That would be perfect. That's what they ought to do.

With an eye-catching design and an upbeat personality, it's no wonder why there have been over 400,000 units sold worldwide. Upon first glance at the 2, the most notable feature is its styling.
