Saw a Donnelly Mitsubishi add in the paper for a better model then I was already negotiating at Bank Street Mitsubishi. Checked CCC numbers for that model and they were very close to wholesale already so I could only negotiate a couple of hundred dollars. They did not want to negotiate at all until I showed them a printout of CCC.

Stewart from Stittsville, ON reported on Friday, January 08, 2010, buying a 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander, and saving $3,000 off of MSRP.
Completed online research and comparative charts (and printed) for all vehicles being considered (5), narrowed research from that to 3 (Mitsubishi Outlander, Ford Escape, Hyundai Sante Fe), then further narrowed research to the Outlander and Escape and secured the Car Cost Canada Wholesale Reports for each. Went on site to Mitsubishi dealership with printed materials for all research and Car Cost Canada Wholesale Report for the Outlander. Test drove the Outlander with a dealership rep (pleasant) then was handed over to the salesman. Too oppressive. Decided to contact alternate Mitsubishi dealership. When on site, made second Mitsubishi dealership aware of discontent with first Mitsubishi dealership. Again produced Car Cost Canada Wholesale Report and held the research print outs. Rep was made aware of research completed and knowledge base regarding price based on this research and the wholesale report for the Outlander. This established that I was serious (about purchase/lease) and educated (about the Outlander and comparable vehicles). I completed a similar on site meeting at a Ford dealership (between on site visits to the Mitsubishi dealerships). I knew from this that I wanted the Outlander. Final on site at the second Mitsubishi dealership resulted in a fairly negotiated final selling price for the Outlander (using the Car Cost Canada Wholesale Report). Car Cost Canada Retail/Wholesale Reports proved to be the backbone of my research and ultimately my ability to negotiate the final price.

I went in with the wholesale price report, told them I would pay 4% over and he took it to his manager and got the okay. This is the easiest vehicle negotiation I have ever had.

Find out all "other" costs before you go to the dealer. This will help you to calculate a fair price using the Car Cost wholesale price. There are other costs such as Administrative and Marketing fees which are added to the final cost. As mentioned in the Car Cost, don't expect a huge discount on a hot selling car or SUV. Be ready to walk out if you don't get the price you think is fair.

Well there aren't many Mitsu dealers around so I had to work with the nearest one Donnelly Mitsu. The salesman was one of the old school; and if I hadn't the CarCostCanada information I'm sure I would have been worse off. In the end, a saving of $2000 off MRSP and taxes equates to $2260 on an Outlander. Fair 5% margin on the dealer invoice pricing for a vehicle in limited supply.

Popular cars may not have as much room to negotiate as the dealer can move them quite easily. Pre-neg rates might be better for either the newest models or popular ones.
