Buying a 2012 Volkswagen Golf Wagon, and saving $1500 off of MSRP.
I compared prices from 3 dealerships and did all communication via email. I looked at all details of the pricing, and asked questions about variances, i.e. why were monster mats $250 at one dealership and $98.11 at another, and admin fees were $199 at one and $400 at another.
After receiving quotes via email I told all dealerships I would compare their information with that of the other quotes, and information from Car Cost Canada. The dealership I ended up buying my car from offered a price that was less than 4% more than wholesale, which I felt was fair given that the car is in high demand.
They were also the most upfront about their costs, and I did not feel that there were multiple hidden fees - as was the case with the other two dealerships. They offered all of the upgrades (i.e. rustproofing, window tinting) as expected, but I did not feel pressured to purchase anything additional. I will get my windows tinted from somewhere other than a dealership to get the best price.
