Full Disclosure: As a seasoned automotive reviewer who’s driven or researched nearly every vehicle on Canadian roads, I have to admit—plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) were somewhat uncharted territory for me. But that was then, and this is now, thanks to the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, provided by Mitsubishi Canada’s media fleet partner. After a week behind the wheel, I’ve discovered that this SUV has a lot to offer, both in terms of its innovative power-train and overall appeal.

Let’s Talk About the PHEV Powertrain

The Outlander PHEV is powered by a combination of a 2.4L 4-cylinder internal combustion engine (ICE) and a 65-kilometer-range electric motor. What makes it stand out are the four distinct driving modes, each tailored for different scenarios:

  1. Normal Mode: This default mode uses both the gas engine and electric motor depending on driving conditions. Great for everyday commuting, but it leans heavily on the electric motor until the battery is depleted.
  2. EV Priority Mode: Perfect for city driving or stop-and-go traffic, this mode keeps things quiet and emissions-free by prioritizing the electric motor.
  3. Save Mode: Ideal for preserving battery charge for later, especially during long highway drives or in extreme temperatures.
  4. Charge Mode: Need to recharge on the go? This mode uses the gas engine to replenish the battery, adding up to 12 kilometers of range on a 20-kilometer drive.

I tested these modes thoroughly and came away impressed. The Charge Mode, in particular, stood out, giving me a clearer understanding of how the PHEV system works and how it can complement daily driving. By the end of my test, I could see myself driving a PHEV like this regularly. Well done, Mitsubishi!

Now, About the Outlander Itself

When I picked up the Outlander, my first thought was, “Wow, nice ride!” It’s got that stylish, cookie-cutter SUV silhouette, but the unique front light assembly sets it apart. Step inside, though, and the Outlander really starts to shine.

The interior of the GT trim level I tested was adorned with gorgeous leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, and a user-friendly infotainment system that’s both slick and intuitive. There was just one small hiccup—I couldn’t immediately figure out which trim I was driving. A quick call to the media fleet confirmed it was the GT trim, which comes loaded with features like:

  • Heated seats and steering wheel
  • Multiple cameras, including an aerial view
  • Navigation with traffic assistance
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Sporty 20-inch alloy wheels
  • Seven-passenger seating (a standout feature in this segment)

For those considering the GT trim, it’s worth noting that it provides nearly every luxury you’d expect, but I’d recommend Mitsubishi add trim badges somewhere visible for clarity.

On the Road

The Outlander drives like a champ. It’s smooth and quiet in Normal Mode but gets a little feisty in Sport Mode when you press the accelerator. Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system provides confidence in various conditions, from snowy streets to muddy trails. The driving selector makes adapting to bad weather a breeze, literally.

Compared to its competitors—the Toyota RAV4 PHEV, Hyundai Tucson PHEV, and Kia Sportage PHEV—the Outlander has a secret weapon: seven-passenger seating. None of the others offer that, giving Mitsubishi a unique edge for larger families or those who occasionally need the extra seats.

In terms of size, the Outlander occupies a sweet spot. It’s slightly bigger than its rivals but not as large (or pricey) as bigger PHEVs like the Mazda CX-90. This makes it versatile and appealing to a wide range of buyers.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a plug-in hybrid that combines practicality, style, and versatility, the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is hard to beat. Its 7-passenger seating is a game-changer in this segment, and the PHEV powertrain is as efficient as it is innovative. Add in a well-appointed interior and solid driving dynamics, and you’ve got a vehicle that deserves serious consideration.

My overall rating: 8.5/10. Mitsubishi, you’ve made a believer out of me!
