If you’re looking for a small crossover that delivers big on style, tech, and efficiency, the 2025 Hyundai Kona is worth a serious look. Offered in both gasoline (ICE) and electric (EV) versions, this second-generation Kona is larger, more refined, and more feature-packed than its predecessor. But does it strike the right balance between fun, function, and value? Let’s take a closer look.

Powertrain Choices: ICE vs. EV

The Kona’s biggest selling point is its versatility, with 10 ICE and 10 EV trim levels to choose from. The ICE models range from the 2.0L Essential FWD at $26,449 to the 1.6T N Line Ultimate AWD with a two-tone roof at $39,199. The 2.0L Essential AWD ($28,449) is the most popular choice among CarCostCanada members, and after spending time behind the wheel, it’s easy to see why. The 2.0L naturally aspirated engine delivers adequate power while maintaining excellent fuel efficiency. Meanwhile, the 1.6L turbocharged models offer a more spirited drive, making them the better choice for those who want a bit more zip.

For EV buyers, the Kona Electric lineup starts at $46,499 for the Preferred FWD and tops out at $52,199 for the N Line Ultimate FWD and the Preferred FWD with the N Line Ultimate Package. Interestingly, the base Kona EV costs exactly $20,000 more than its gas-powered counterpart. Coincidence? Perhaps not.

Range is a big deal in the EV world, and the Kona Electric delivers. Rated at 420 km per charge, real-world results suggest a consistent 350+ km of range. That’s impressive for a small crossover, making it a viable option for urban commuters and even road-trippers who keep an eye on the range and the navigation’s recommendations to re-charge during the trip.

Driving Experience: Surprisingly Sporty

The 2025 Kona impresses with its smooth yet engaging ride. The 2.0L Essential AWD I tested felt secure and well-planted, whether navigating city streets or cruising at 120 km/h on the highway. Steering is nicely weighted, and the suspension strikes a good balance between comfort and agility. Power delivery isn’t mind-blowing, but it’s perfectly adequate for daily driving, and there’s enough extra grunt when you need it for highway passing.

As for efficiency, the 2.0L Essential AWD’s 38L fuel tank provides an impressive 700 km of combined city/highway range. That’s efficiency you can appreciate, especially with rising fuel costs.

Interior: A Modern Tech Haven

Hyundai has really stepped up its game with the Kona’s interior. The dashboard layout is sleek and modern, with dual 12.3-inch displays (infotainment and digital gauge cluster) available on higher trims. Even base models get a well-designed cabin with quality materials and intuitive controls.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard across the lineup, though wireless connectivity is oddly absent in models equipped with the larger infotainment screen. Navigation, a sunroof, and a premium Bose audio system are available on higher trims, adding a touch of luxury. One of my favorite features? The blind spot warning indicators, which are both visible in the side mirrors and projected in the digital cluster—a game-changer for highway driving.

That said, the rear seats are a bit snug for taller passengers, and while cargo space is improved over the previous generation, it’s still on the smaller side compared to competitors like the Honda HR-V and Toyota Corolla Cross.

Exterior: Sleek, But a Bit Low

The 2025 Kona looks bold and futuristic, with its seamless LED daytime running light stretching across the front end. The redesigned body is longer and wider than before, giving it a more athletic stance. Higher trims, particularly the N Line models, add sporty touches like aggressive bumpers, dual exhaust outlets, and unique alloy wheels that make the Kona look like a mini-performance SUV.

However, there’s one aspect of the exterior that might not sit well with everyone—literally. The Kona rides relatively low for a crossover, which makes it feel more like a hatchback than a traditional SUV. While that enhances its handling, it does take away some of that elevated ride height many crossover buyers prefer.

Safety & Ratings

The Kona doesn’t just look good, it’s also built to keep you safe. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded it a respectable 4 out of 5 stars in crash tests, and it comes equipped with a full suite of Hyundai’s SmartSense driver-assistance features, including forward collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Final Verdict: A Top Choice in the Subcompact SUV Segment

TheCarMagazine.com gives the 2025 Hyundai Kona an overall rating of 8.8 out of 10, aligning closely with ratings from our American counterparts at Car & Driver (8.5), Edmunds (8.5), and Consumer Reports (9.0). It’s a well-rounded vehicle that delivers style, tech, efficiency, and solid driving dynamics.

If you’re looking for an affordable, fuel-efficient, and tech-savvy crossover, the gas-powered Kona remains a top pick. And if you’re ready to make the jump to an EV but don’t want to break the bank, the Kona Electric is one of the best value-for-money options out there. Just don’t expect it to sit high like a traditional SUV—this one’s all about blending crossover practicality with car-like driving dynamics. And in that regard, Hyundai nailed it.
